YSaC, Vol. 1294: Merely a leopard, after he’s peppered.
BEAUTIFUL TIGER PHOTOS — set of 2 – $35
For sale are TWO (2) beautiful TIGER Photos in wooden frames
Both measure 17.5 x 11.5 STUNNING photos
Well – it’s definitely not a lion. Our poster has at least successfully avoided that obvious trap. It is also not a Lionel, although it’s hard to see how anyone could make THAT mistake. Well, not twice anyway.
However, as Aija, our submitter, points out – it’s also not.a.tiger. In fact, these seem to be two different species – a cheetah and a leopard. (The cheetah is the one with simple black spots, the leopard the one with the multicolored spots. The more you know. *ding*) I’ll also point out the obvious that these are also not actually photographs. But on the plus side, they did at least include a picture of the BACK of the art. That’s what I always look at first when I’m buying photos of not tigers.
Each is not.a.photo of not.a.tiger. I’d say we have not.a.sale.
Ooh, excellent [corey] on the spots!
Leopard spots are a group of 4-6 dark, near-black spots around a brown spot.
Cheetah are much leaner, with longer, runner’s legs than the tree-climbing Leopard.
Also, Cheetah claws are non-rectractile, like a Siamese cat. This is considered to be an adaptation for high-speed pursuit. The fused phlange (feline retractile claws are affixed to the distal, third, phlange) offers more traction, but, is one less “breakable” item when at top speed. Also, the mass of tendon & ligament that would be in place is, instead, given over to the remaining phlange. This makes them both stronger and leaner.

Yeah, and cheetahs look infinitely better in sunglasses than leopards.
You might say that, when it comes to being cool, a cheetah
*Puts sunglasses on the cheetah*
gives a leopard a run for its money.
Raawwwwr.
“Cheetah claws are non-rectractile, like a Siamese cat”
I did not know this. We have a Siamese, and she’s always slashing me. This explains a lot. Thanks, Cap’n! You’re better than an encyclopedia and Google both!
[corey]
Some Siamese, anyway. Having done a lot of research on my Siamese, I learned quite a bit about the breeding range of these cats.
The Traditional Siamese (also called First Siamese, True Siamese, or Applehead Siamese) can retract its claws almost as much as a normal cat can; however, these don’t really represent the breed anymore.
The more modern, show-quality Siamese cats (Lilac Point, Lynx Point, and Modern Seal point), have more difficulty retracting because of some of the side-effects of selective in-breeding (cross-eyedness and Nystagums being some other fun side-effects). The retractibility of the claws (or lack thereof) is also way more evident in the rear claws which are almost entirely un-retracted at all times.
Also, pet-quality Siamese are commonly crossed with tabby (not purposefully for the most part) or have traits associated with Traditional Siamese, so they typically have milder in-bred health issues and more retractile claws.
TacoKitty is among the pet-quality ones as he is likely crossed with Mackerel tabby. His front claws fully retract, but his back claws really don’t retract more than half. Even as a cross, he does have the nystagmus, and if he stares at me with those jittery eyes I start to get dizzy.
He’s also gotten to be pretty tubby… even on only 1/2 cup of food a day. I think he’s getting into the pantry and eating all our snacks when we’re asleep.
[/corey]
Our cat is a Siamese/Manx hybrid, and seems to have no difficulty at all in retracting her claws.
I guess the take-away here is this:
While a Seal Point has a fused phalanx,
This is not the case with the Siamanx.
It’s my understanding that fixed claws in Siamese is a double recessive.
I’ll fire off an email to a smart person I know, who actually know this stuff, I just listen and do not forget. But, I bet the “dog claw” effect is a genetic defect that just became a breeding characteristic.
Cross breeding with Manx will complicate things, they are known to be extra-manipulative with that distal phlange. (Mine likes to use his dew-claws as “thumbs” to the extent that he can–no picked locks, yet, but he can defeat child-resistant cabinet doors with ease.)
Demon Duck – LOVE the pseudo Ogden Nash. As you can guess from the title of today’s post, he’s one of my favorites.
The Pseudo Ogden is a curious beast,
It growls a bit, but can’t Nash its teeth.
Or something to that effect.
Sparky,
I am interesed in yur yagwar pichers due yu haf them inna 5×7 skware?
Those are tigers. Haven’t you ever seen a dot-to-dot picture before? Sheesh.
…and if you cross your eyes, you can see the sailboat!
…and yet again to Sparkies we all look alike. Just as bare two-footed apes do to us hunting tetrapods.
So what you’re saying is: I look like a ham sammich to you?
you got it, monkey!
A “ham sammich”? Probably only if you over-emote on stage.
Probably “Simian slider,” like as not, to carnivorous tetrapodia.
These are not.a.tigers.
These are also not.a-goin’.on.my.walls.
When I first started dating Hubby Monkey, his bedroom was decorated in African-cat-lion-spotted-striped-jungle-oh-my-gawd stuff. Down to the dust ruffle on his bed. I expected to see monkeys swinging fom the ceiling fan. I have since redecorated. Monkey, please!
I know what you did…you added hot pink accents didn’t you?
No, she just put a big Steelers throw over the bed. Monkey, Please.
I thunked her ‘redecorating’ was merely swinging from the ceiling fan.
He gets points for using a dust ruffle, though.
*Hmf*
Women are all the same. The first thing TacoMa’am did when we were dating was have me get rid of my coffee table that was made out of salvaged milk-crates and multicolored tie wraps.
That thing just oozed class and I had to toss it out. It was conversation starter number 1!
And after she got rid of that, she started eying up the entertainment center made out of pallets.
Could you at least keep the pallet lawn furniture?
She let me keep the sandbox, at least.
…if you joined up the ‘photos’ would they become a furry, vicious Push-Me-Pull-You?
it’s pointy on all ends!
Dan, I wasted valuable time this morning looking for the like button on your comments. Seriously, that is an adaptation we should look in to! But there is no explanation as to why these cats have no hind quarters. Must be trick photography or something. Smoking mirrors, you know. That kind of stuff.
Without taking pictures of the back of the artwork, we might assume they were some manner of trompe de l’oeil and not actually paintings of cats.

If the eyes in human portraits are said to “follow” a person about the room, then do the ears on these images follow instead?
“The more you know. *ding*”
Whatever is in the microwave is done.
Don’t tell me you’ve started using microwavable coffe slices.
I put my coffee slices in the toaster, put them on a plate, and pour warm caramel over them.
*yum*
That sounds pretty good, actually.
Are those actual samples of their hide on the upper and lower borders? I tried to do that with my family portraits, but met with some resistance.
Duck – did you remind it to put the lotion on its skin, first? I find the resistance lessens if it remembers the lotion.
You’re welcome.
Ducky … and use a very very sharp knife
I tried, CJ, but being waterfowl, they mostly opted to get the hose again.
Please note the writing about Siamese has turned my avatar into a Siamese / Birman cat.
*this may or may not be true*
We had a Seal Point/Alleycat mix for 11 years. That was hubby’s favorite cat..ever..and he was the chattiest critter I ever saw. He was also very affectionate.
I don’t remember the claws being an issue, so I’m guessing his retracted at least partially.
All this talk about the Siamese has made me miss him. *sniffle*
Our little applehead siamese is a chatty Kathy too. And she sounds less like a cat than a baby, or cooing dove.
I had a tortoiseshell when I was growing up who had a Siamese mix mother, Misty had several Siamese characteristics including the “crying baby” meow. Dad always said she sounded like a goat, though.
Apparently all black cats have Siamese somewhere in their genetic woodpile.
Some dots, works perfectly fine….
Oops, that was yesterday’s thread.
[corey] The bones are phalanges, not phlanges (singular = phalanx.) Wolverine has phlanges. [/corey]
Is there a special tag for coreys about coreys? And is one a corey or a Corey? Je ne parle pas HTML.
Perhaps nesting Cs?
C-C-[Ccorey] B-b-beautful [/Ccorey]
Technically they’re photos of half a cheetah and half a leopard.
Well, if you count the inked black and white ones, it’s about 3.5 cats per painting.
Penguin, Ralph! I had misplaced the keys to the box. You are free, now. Punchity Punch Punch!
Good Morning (On the west coast it’s still morning), Prosperous Cheetahs!
