YSaC, Vol. 1618: OK, smart guy… YOU tell us what color it should be!
Big Round Fiberglass Disks
Large one is eight ft. dia. One inch thick.
Small one is about two inch thick.
Must take both.
My first thought on looking at this ad was the same as Ralph, who sent this in with the simple comment, “WTF?” However, the more I look at these, the more I think I think I can see a few uses.
Th-Th-Th-That’s all for today, folks!
Guess I should go back to bed. I don’t get the title reference. I could Google it. Maybe I’ll get a round tuit later.
I Googled it for you Windy. It’s a reference to DAFT on YSaC Vol. 1618.
It’s a Douglas Adams reference from “Life, The Universe, and Everything.”
It’s from “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe”, said by a Golgafrimcham about the invention of the wheel. I think.
Sorry Virginia, no, there does not “Gotta be a market for these.”
That, and the weight of a 2″ thick disk of fiberglass about 4′ across is slightly staggering.
Where am I?
On Craigslist.
What will you take in exchange?
Information.
Whose side are you on?
That would be telling. We want information … information … information.
You won’t get it.
By firm OBOs or by PalPal, we will.
Who are you?
The new Sparky #2.
Who is Sparky #1?
You are qp340cwn8ad8ecneaiefnefmofenaovepueof@reply.craigslist.org.
I am not an anonymized email address. I am a free man!
Ahahahahahahah!
*sniff* That was beautiful! I can’t wait for the part where Rover comes to the town square!
If you give a sparky a drill, he’ll drink a case of PBR and do whatever this is to grandma’s old dining room table.
Ah yes, the giant fiberglass disks used as money by the inhabitants of the island of Yap. They used to be made of stone until their government took their economy off the stone standard and started minting giant fiberglass coins. Now there isn’t enough actual stone on the island to cover the face value of the fiat currency.
When did they go off the leaf standard?
…and for you younger readers….these are what our older music players used. The one on the left we called an “LP”….the one on the right is a “45”. Thank God they got smaller and easier to use!!!!!
What the [censored] good are those? They got holes in them!
Well, I suppose if you were trapped in a room with no doors or windows but you had these, you wouldn’t need The Table and the Mear.
As a guess, the [corey] answer is that they are used for moulding concrete or some similar material. And, that after a certain number of trips into the mould, they are discarded.
Doing some quick ciphering these are both about 2 cubic feet in volume, and FG is about 95#/cf, so Spark’s discs are about 200 pounds (91kg; 14 stone) each. So, those (potentially) sticky fingers were worn out.
I like that he points out that they are ROUND disks. Just in case we thought they were going to be, you know, triangular disks or something.
Or those pesky six-side octangles.
Isn’t Triangular Disks IF’s Three Dog Night/The Platters mash-up band?
Man, I’m glad discs got smaller. I remember these from the ’80s. The drive for those 8 ft. diameter discs took up my whole garage, and they only held a few megabytes of data.
Possibly useful for white collar workers.
No doubt, Ralph! Maybe this would deter would-be Madoffs in a way potential time in Club Fed doesn’t seem to. Bring back the cangue!
You don’t really want to bring back the Great Ming Legal Code, do you??
Reminds me of elementary school. The test to weed out the Gifted and Talented snowflakes was a paper with a bunch of circles on it and instructions to make whatever we could in 10 minutes.
I made mine into a hat and a brooch and a pterodactyl…
Some red and white paint, some duct tape, and a rabid goat, and I can trick-or-treat as a Target store.
Tank-girl, I really must insist that you step out of your tank for this. Punchity Punch Punch!
Good Morning, Hole-y Rollers!
The bigger one could be a toilet seat for elephants. You would need some heavy-duty hinges, and a lot of training.
Otherwise, the guys would leave the seat up.
